About us

Welcome to Horizon Childcare – we are a small nursery in Exeter with a personal approach. We cater to families by offering hours childcare sessions between the hours of 7am – 6pm on Mondays – Fridays for 52 weeks of the year.

Our aim is to provide outstanding education and care to all our children through a child-centered approach. We strive to form strong partnerships with families and other professionals to enable the children in our care to receive the best start.

Our nursery has been open since 2016 and grew in size in 2019 to cope with the increasing popularity of the setting. We now have 18 dedicated, nurturing and professional staff who oversee each child’s individual needs across three rooms. Children between the ages of 3 months and 5 years are welcome to attend our setting all year round and until they begin school. We prepare the oldest children for the next stage of their lives by making links with local schools and working in partnership to enable a sooth transition to school..

We choose Horizon Childcare!

Horrah! You’ve decided that Horizon Childcare is the right place for your child – welcome to the family! At this point we will ask you to fill in a registration form online so we have all the vital information we need to keep your child safe and prepare to make them feel comfortable. We will also ask for a £40 registration fee which covers administrative costs and settling in sessions for your child. From this point you will also start to receive nursery correspondence such as newsletter and useful information.

Settling Sessions

Just before your child is due to start with us, we will arrange some settling in sessions to help them feel comfortable in the environment and with the team before their first day. We initially book 3 settling in sessions which comprise of:

  • First visit – 1 hour, supported by a parent or carer
  • Second visit – 1 hour, ideally left with us without a parent or caregiver
  • Third visit – 2 hours usually over lunchtime without a parent or care giver.

These settling visits are provisional and just sets a rough guide of what we offer. However, we also understand that every child is different, and some children may need more that 3 settling visits to feel comfortable in a new environment and with new people. Extra settling sessions can be booked in advance at no extra cost to help children to feel fully settled and to put your mind at ease.

Safeguarding is of the upmost importance at Horizon Childcare. Our team have been through an extensive recruitment process and have enhanced DBS checks. Each member of staff has also completed safeguarding training and receives regular training and supervision meetings to check ongoing suitability. We also aim for every member of our team to have paediatric first aid training at all times – currently 17/18 staff are trained (as of July 2021). Our nursery building and resources are risk assessed and all visitors are accompanied by a member of staff at all times. No mobile phones are allowed to be used around the children and we work closely with other agencies to safeguard the children in our care. We have no smoking or vaping on site and the building and garden are secured with alarmed doors/gates.

Funded Childcare

Our nursery welcomes all children and can cater for 2, 3 and 4 year olds in receipt of government funding each week. We can offer up to 30 hours funding for 3 and 4 year olds eligible for the extended entitlement and provide flexible, hourly booking patterns for a family-friendly approach. To find out if your child is eligible for government funding please visit: www.childcarechoices.gov.uk

Childcare Vouchers and Tax-free Childcare

We can accept childcare vouchers and Taxfree childcare for families who are registered. For more information of how you can get help from the government with your childcare needs please visit the Childcare Choices website via the following link: https://www.childcarechoices.gov.uk/

Parent feedback on anonymous parent survey July 2021

“I honestly, could not ask for a better nursery, my little girl has changed so dramatically over the last 12 months, all thanks to the girls at Horizon. They are kind, caring and very passionate about the well-being of all their children. They support you in every situation and are always happy to help.

The best thing I have ever done was choose Horizon. She comes home so happy and full of stories every day! The staff have helped my little girl more than I could ever be thankful for.”

Parent review on DayNurseries.com, June 2021

“A friendly, easy-going and calming setting. I had a really informative show around from the duty manager. As a parent who has no previous experience of childcare, I was fully put at ease by the reassuring and professional team. Our child has settled really quickly despite being a lockdown baby and not having socialised with others. We cannot recommend this nursery highly enough.”

Parent review on DayNurseries.com, June 2021

“As teachers, we were really keen to get the best Nursery we could for our daughter and we looked around several places before choosing Horizon Childcare. Our daughter has attended since she was 8-months-old and is thriving under their care. They nurture and support our child emotionally, physically and academically and she couldn’t be in better hands. Thank you to all of the staff at Horizon but especially her key worker who is the best ever!”

Parent review on DayNurseries.com, June 2021

“Horizon and their lovely staff members go above and beyond! They are so caring towards the children and are a wonderful bunch of women. My child has allergies and they have made sure that his needs are completely met… I highly recommend them to all my friends and family and wouldn’t look anywhere else.”

Parent comment and vote for National Day Nursery Association Award for Nursery of the Year February 2020

“…What we liked most about Horizon Childcare when we first visited it was the homely atmosphere and welcoming feeling. To this day, no matter how much in a rush you are or how grim the weather is, you are always greeted with a smile and you are always sent off with a well wish for the day ahead. Both my husband and I have always appreciated the constant friendliness of the staff…”

“I couldn’t be happier with the care my son receives at Horizon – he loves nursery and is growing into a confident, content, expressive and much-loved little person. Staff combine the perfect amount of child care expertise, gentle yet firm guidance and genuine affection for my little one. They are also there when we need advice or support; they keep in touch with us about latest developments at the nursery and are excited when our son reaches a new milestone. They want the best for him and us. My heartfelt thanks for everything you do Horizon!”
